Anne is the principle character who overwhelms the entire novel and the story is told in her own emotional voice. The creator portrays Anne as a pompous and complex being who battles to endure and characterize her own different world from that of her mom. Anne apparently develops as a character as she battles with the dread of detachment from her mom, turns into a specialist in marbles and in the long run creates scorn and outrage as she opposes her motherââ¬â¢s endeavors to characterize her reality (Kincaid 32). Mrs. Johnââ¬â¢s character is created and characterized by Ann through her abstract portrayal.
